Following separation processes with NMR
Partitioning between phases is common in reaction engineering, biology, extraction, among others. Understanding the distribution and dynamics of partitioning is crucial for designing novel materials.
What we do:
We have introduced systems based on charged polymers (polyelectrolytes) which allow for aqueous phase separation – we can extract small molecules or proteins from water without needing an extra solvent. However, in order to tune these systems to applications, we need to study what happens to every component (polyelectrolyte, counterions, water, solutes).
We have recently introduced an NMR methodology to study such systems when separated. In this project, we would like to expand this work to determine in real time the fate of every component in aqueous phase separation systems.
What you can expect:
Experimental lab work with polymers and preparation of soft materials. Work with analytical equipment and data analysis.
